What you'll learn in this episode

  • Why a country of just 10 million people became the world's "Start-Up Nation"
  • How the Israeli army — units like 8200 and Talpiot — quietly trains the country's future tech founders
  • The Hebrew (and borrowed-from-English) vocabulary of tech and high-tech: הייטק, סטארט-אפ, אקזיט
  • What an "exit" actually is, and the record-breaking Israeli ones — Waze, Mobileye and Wiz
  • What בינה מלאכותית (AI) means, and an honest look at its advantages and disadvantages

Where the idea came from

This episode is close to home. I work in high-tech as a data scientist, so I'm using data and בינה מלאכותית (bina melachutit — artificial intelligence) every single day. My husband Alon works in high-tech too, so these are the conversations we actually have at home. I wanted to learn — and teach myself — the vocabulary that goes with this world, and I couldn't think of a better way than making an episode about it and learning together with you.

A few words to listen for

  • בינה מלאכותית (bina melachutit) — artificial intelligence (AI)
  • הייטק (high-tech) — the tech industry; the typical answer to "where do you work?" in Tel Aviv
  • אקזיט (exit) — when a big company buys a start-up, or it enters the stock market (שוק המניות)
  • חברה (chevra) — company. It shares the root ח.ב.ר with חבר (chaver — friend) — fitting, since so many Israeli startups are built by two friends from the army.

The full vocabulary list, with example sentences and both transcripts (Hebrew and English), is on this page.

A quick note on the "borrowed" words

Hebrew leans heavily on English for technology: start-up, high-tech, technologia, exit are all loanwords. So don't be thrown when you hear English words sitting inside Hebrew sentences — that's just how Israelis talk about tech.
